Those of you that regularly read my blog (although I apologise – there’s not been much regular about it of late!) will know that I like black and white photography. Its where I started back when I used to shoot film and even now in today’s digital colour environment I still think some of my better shots are ones I’ve converted to black and white.

So I was very pleased to see the latest Craft & Vision eBook – The Power of Black & White in Adobe Lightroom & Beyond (a master class) by Piet Van den Eynde. Containing 100 pages and costing just US$5 it’s a deal not to be missed if you’re into your monochrome!

Craft & Vision have published other books on black and white before (see previous posts here and here) but this one goes into far more detail. Additionally it contains some great advanced processes that I wasn’t even aware of, and shows methods, tips and tricks you can apply in Lightroom to get the best from your black and white conversions.

Each chapter starts with one of Piet’s beautiful shots to inspire you and contains three case studies showing the different challenges in converting the images out of your camera. There’s a wealth of information on the interface and panels within Lightroom that will help you the most and examples where presets can be used to help you with repetitive tasks (although I’m not a fan of the one-click global presets, the methods outlined here make sense).

Finally, the beyond part of “…Lightroom and Beyond” covers cases where Lightroom may not cut it and you need to pull the image into Photoshop to get the best out of your image. There’s also information on a range of plug-ins specifically for black and white complete with links to the websites for each.

Overall a great, in-depth analysis of processing in black and white using (mainly) Lightroom and even if black and white is your thing I suspect you’ll find some pointers, tips and tricks you weren’t aware of.
